First things first, you’ll need some training

Inspector Flow

Inspector Flow is a fantastic option for future home inspectors that are starting with little to no experience in the trades. Inspector Flow starts with the basics of each system within a home, and builds from there with online coursework taught in a group setting by a live instructor. The cost is higher and the timing is longer, but the training is more comprehensive and personalized.

InterNACHI

InterNACHI is a well established resource for initial and ongoing coursework. An annual membership will grant you access to all of their courses and additional resources. You could take the required Standards of Practice course and then choose from their course library to meet the minimum hours needed. I would consider this a semi-led option that may be best for someone who I comfortable charting their own path. The added benefit is that you can continue to use this membership for continuing education or ongoing supplemental education.

AHIT

I used American Home Inspector Training when I was getting started because it was the fastest and simplest means of satisfying the training requirements. AHIT provides pre-recorded courses, etextbooks and exam prep. This option is best for people who have a solid basic understanding of the systems of a house and simply need a balanced review of all of these systems in order to be prepared for the national exam. The price is comparable to a year of InterNACHI depending on which package you choose.
